Laundry Basics
When to dry clean a suit
The answer is probably less often than you would think. Dry cleaning too often can significantly shorten the life span of your suit by weakening the fibres and leading to shiny spots or a "worn" appearance.
Clothing Care
Quality clothing is an expensive investment that should be cared for correctly - below are a few tips on caring for your garments
- Always check the label before machine washing - certain fabrics are only dry cleanable.
- Wash light and dark items separately, and wash whites all by themselves.
- Unbutton clothes before washing. This lessons wear and tear on the buttons.
- Wash dark colours, fleece and clothes with lettering inside out - this prolongs the lifespan of the fabric
- 100% cotton will more than likely shrink in the tumble dryer - air dry these items on the clothes line
- Check to ensure a stain is removed before tumble drying the garment as once a stain is heat dried it is virtually impossible to remove
Removing Stains
Act Fast! If stain removal is treated quickly and specifically many stains can be removed without a trace.
Below are a few general tips for washable fabrics:
- Blot with a clean cloth - soak up as much of the stain as you can
- Work from the back - apply the satin remover and run water from the back to the front of the fabric
- Don't mix stain removers together - they may cause a chemical reaction and make matters even worse
- Wash ASAP - the stain may appear to be gone but it is still important to wash the fabric thoroughly
- Always wash in cold water first - heat sets many stains permanently
Protecting Your Clothes from Insect Damage
Dry Cleaning is a great method in preventing insect damage as the moths and silverfish don't like the dry cleaning solution. They will in most cases stay away from the clothing for up to four weeks after its returned from the cleaners.
Moths and silverfish also tend to settle on the dirty spots on a garment, especially food marks. Therefor clean garments are less likely to be damaged.
